Well this weekend was a total blast! We just wrapped up our 10th annual Bastille Day party at the shop- we can’t believe 10 years have flown by just like that!
Since this weekend was so much fun, we thought we’d share some highlights and behind the scenes pics from our Bastille Day celebration…
First, we made fliers and posters for Sur La Mer to hand out locally. We create a new image for Bastille Day every year, and this year we were inspired by old school travel posters . I think we will need to incorporate a hunky merman in every poster we use in the future! We also posted this super cute little video of the jellyfish and merman hanging out.
To coordinate with the Sur La Mer theme, Karen gave the window a fun and summery look. Its difficult to see in photos (there is always a window glare!) but if you look closly you can see the sand that is on the floor!
Next, we prepped the store. Before any event we host we clean the store like you would if you had guests coming over in your home! Every nook and cranny gets scrubbed, sprayed, and swept. If you have ever been in the store, you will have noticed our gigantic floor to ceiling chalkboard. For Bastille Day, we did a large sea themed drawing (check out the quick video of creating the chalkboard here). I love the little sardine with the whale!
Then, once everything thing is clean, we move the new products out on the floor. In our last post, we told you that this year our theme for Bastille Day was “Sur La Mer.” We spent the better part of a year researching fun new products for the store that went with our sea side theme. We brought in classic sailor striped shirts, sea salt smelling soap, netting, and all sorts of breezy French finds that made us feel like we were on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea!
Once the store was ready, we opened the doors! This year, we began the day with mini baguettes from Lea, the cutest French cafe, just down the street from us. Our newest Peach, Maria handed them out to our first 50 customers, and boy did go quickly! If you have’t been to Lea yet, you have to check it out next time you are in Oak Park. They serve a variety of French street food, and their salads nothing short of amazing, but the mushroom tartine is my personal favorite!
Outside the store we had a lot going on! We had a crepe maker and a beignet maker- and oh my god they were delicious! The crepes were both savory and sweet, it felt like there were a hundred combinations to choose from! And let me tell you about the beignets. Oh, they were amazing. Like a little puff of sugary heaven, I tell ya.
We had Madame Fifer of the L’Institut français d’Oak Park stop by the Peach. If you live in or near Oak Park and are considering learning to speak French, give her a ring! Karen, Pete, and I all took a beginning classes and it was such an amazing experience- I cannot recommend her classes enough!
We also have two live bands play throughout the day (check out our Instagram to hear them play here). They were amazing! It made the day feel like a dream. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could play at the shop every day?
Even though we had all of that going on, the highlight of the day was definitely celebrating with all of you. We had so much fun meeting new people as well as seeing old friends!
Have you ever seen our dear friend Jennie at the shop? She is nothing short of amazing and is a wine guru! We owe many of our favorite wines that we serve at the shop to her!
We can’t say thank you enough to everyone who came out to the Peach and spent their Saturday with us. Small business isn’t always easy but days like this sure make it worth it. Cheers to Bastille Day, cheers to beautiful summer days, and cheers to 10 years of being your favorite French shop. We love being part of the wonderful and welcoming community in Oak Park, and can’t wait to see what the next ten years has in store.
